Tempo’s philosophy is to increase, enhance and support society’s appreciation and experience of dance and how it relates to them. Audiences can choose from a selection of evening-length works, showcases and curated shared programmes that feature stunning and innovative dance works from New Zealand’s top dance talent. Post-show forums and artist honourings offer a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look into the art of making dance and the people who shape the dance community.

Tempo also caters for the ever-evolving New Zealand dance community, including both emerging and established artists. The festival has always been proud of its dedication to educating young dancers and choreographers by giving them opportunities to hone their craft in a professional theatre setting. Tempo has created a  ladder of educational progression for dancers beginning with children as young as 4 years old, moving through high school students to tertiary dance students and emerging professional dancers and choreographers.  Opportunities to present work as part of a shared programme or showcase (short works) or in an evening-length show at Tempo’s new home, Q Theatre, benefit artists through professional development and by raising the profile of dance in Aotearoa.

Tempo also offers emerging artists mentoring support through a designated critical feedback process that aims to encourage both artistic and professional development.

The 2011 festival features performances by Atamira Dance Company, Okareka Dance Company, Te Mana Huia kapa haka group, Ann Dewey and Spinning Sun, Southern Lights Dance Company, Justin Haiu, TMC, dancers from the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Prestige Dance Crew, Footnote Dance Company, Malia Johnston, ReQuest Dance Crew, Kristian Larsen, Alexa Wilson and many, many more.
