It’s not a hotel but there is a pool and a concierge. It’s not a boarding school but there are set meal times and classes. It’s is not a prison but those inside like to joke that it is death row. This is a Retirement Village and while it’s not off-limits many of us on the outside feel nervous about stepping inside.

In this production audiences are invited in to meet some of the people who call this place home. The actors are members of Third Act, a programme of improvisation and drama introduced into four Ryman Healthcare villages, throughout Wellington, fifteen months ago. For many of the participants this is their first experience of a public dramatic performance.  

Age on Stage: Dance Me to the End of Time, is a devised performance directed by Nicola Pauling and Kerryn Palmer from Voice Arts, a charity that uses the tools of applied improvisation and applied theatre for community development and personal wellbeing. Voice Arts developed the Third Act programme and their facilitators have supported the participants to build their confidence, their capacity and their passion for this unique performance.

The show weaves together performances that explore several themes close to the hearts of the participants: life transitions, moments that shift us from one kind of life to another, the transition into old age and into aged care, the nature of memory and the joy and pain of remembering.

We invite you to witness a brave and joyful performance by a group of creatives who may well reshape your idea of what it is to be old.
