Is the road to self discovery still on the map? Navigating who we are has never been tougher, access is blocked with the promise of beauty and perfection brought to us by the creators of the lie itself. The personal highway to our soul is in multilane gridlock. Do we still exist if we don’t select our cookie cutter social media persona? Does it really take made in 3rd world designer couture to make us feel like a million bucks?

Physical comedy crashing into performance art through Psychedelic, Satirical, Personal & Political storytelling that’s packed to the rafter’s with puns, punches, pussy & possibilities.

“Glitta Supernova is a crucial part of the female struggle for sexual liberation” Regional News Wellington.

Hard-hitting act of subversion masquerades as live nude cabaret

Review by Alison Finigan 27th Mar 2017

[Apology: This review was inadvertently left in limbo. Meanwhile Body Map has won the Dunedin Fringe Festival 2017’s ‘Best in Fringe’ Award!]

Billed as “a 60 minute physical freeway that won’t be tarred for convenience”, Body Map is a wild, in-yer-face (often literally), uninhibited, funny and subversive journey through the female body in all its physical and cultural manifestations.

The body in question belongs to Australia cabaret diva Glitta Supernova, who uses her considerable physical charms and enormous comic talent to entertain, shock and provoke her audience with an audacious, hilarious and sharply political show.

Body Map is a revelation in so many ways. In just over 60 minutes of fast paced, physical theatre, the adorably talented Glitta peels away the encrusted layers that Western commodification has imposed on the female body, allowing its free, unconstrained and authentic essence to emerge. This process is embodied in the opening sequence where a large Dada-esque human form slowly sheds its neoprene carapace to reveal Glitta in all her curvy, pink and sparkly splendour.

From this point on it’s all aboard the Bordello bus for a Tiki tour like no other through the highs, lows and bouncy bits of the life of an Ozzie party girl in the club scene of the 90s. Our tour guide is a raunchy GPS system that takes the audience through a Kama Sutra landscape with destinations like Pussy Parade and Cunnilingus Crescent that offer attractions catering to every taste.

In the process we witness scenes from Glitta’s life, including genital mutilation in Surry Hills, life as a demented porno bunny complete with carrot accessories (don’t ask), and how to turn sex into a sellable fantasy experience – Avon ladies take note.  Fun with meat is particularly close to the edge.  I can say no more – you have to see it to believe it.

Many characters clothed and unclothed make an appearance in this one-woman show, including three members of the audience who boldly step into the unknown but manage to remain fully clothed throughout, at least on the night I was there.

The raucous innuendo, outrageous stories, shameless exhibitionism, and forty foot eyelashes that are the diva’s stock in trade are all accessories to a deeper purpose: to expose the hypocrisy of a society built on greed, power and control.

Words and phrases that feed negative female body image make their appearance as elements in Western culture’s arsenal of control. The show is one grand gesture of glorious anarchy, as such labels are rejected along with the imposition of taboos that stunt the individual and curb the body’s freedom of expression.

Body Map is Glitta Supernova gleefully sticking it to the world; this is a hard-hitting act of subversion masquerading as live nude cabaret.  Don’t miss it!
