Evokes wonder, inspiration and conversation

Review by Melissa Bee 27th Feb 2021

Dark Matter VR, a visionary piece of theatre from afterburner, returns to the Fringe this year after winning 2017 Best in Fringe [see review by Sam Trubridge].

Dark Matter VR connects us to theatre and each other in new and innovative ways. Its inclusion in the Fringe is more important than ever, as artists from Aotearoa and beyond are forced to find alternatives to traditional theatre. The piece allows theatregoers to connect with art and each other in a time where physical and social isolation is the new normal.

Your experience is heightened through 180 degree virtual reality headsets, at times making the viewer question whether they are watching a show or are part of the show itself. The masterful lighting from Martyn Roberts and the ethereal movements of Katherine Kennedy evoke calm, confusion, fear and wonder within five minutes.

If you can, use the headset with Madaleine Trigg’s felt art, to increase the feeling of participation in the piece.

afterburner’s work evokes wonder, inspiration and conversation. Instead of applause, the viewers just say ‘wow’, and a cascade of conversation follows. The combination of awe and interaction is a true testament to the power of the Dark Matter VR experience.
