Deceit, clues and wilful misdirection with no holds barred

Review by Patrick Davies 19th Mar 2011

Back again at The Church Cinema, Bar & Café for round three of the evening. Du Bist Ein Uber Show is the improv show of Improsaurus. A number of the comedians from the AntSocial Tap shows join up with the regular improv players. The long format is centered around a court case over a murder that the audience decide.

Trubie-Dylan Smith is our host at the top of the evening, with a bouncy smile and wave. He warms up the audience and the actors quickly and we’re off. He’s also the defendant’s lawyer at odds with the prosecutor out to get her collar. We have our murder victim, the murder weapon and it’s no holds barred. We run through witnesses whose recollections turn into real time scenes – each adding another level of deceit, clues and wilful misdirection until it all comes out into the open in a blaze of glory.

The cast work extremely well together. Long range formats require a lot of listening and retention of information, not only from the audience but from each other as the larger story is woven together. Everyone’s ears are open here and it there is a wobble, they support while still gently ribbing for the minor infraction.

One standout is their ability, as an ensemble, to pace themselves both in character entry and narrative. Just when a ‘tilt’ is needed, a player grabs a suggestion as it’s thrown on stage, relishing the chance to make sense of it all. Some of the musical accompaniment is a little one-sided in style but nothing to detract from the overall fun. I gotta say I would have liked to have a programme.

The beauty is that it’s gonna be different every night. Grab a ticket if you can.
