Step inside a beating heart where a single aerialist hangs upon heartstrings in a delicate, yet tenacious performance in the air. Like watching a timelapse of a blooming flower, Heartstrings is a journey of life which unfolds before your eyes. Using no dialogue, Heartstrings invites you to a human experience that transcends barriers of language and culture.

Heartstrings is a one of a kind immersive experience integrating aerial performance, lighting and sound design. Taking place above you inside a structure constructed with over one hundred metres of fabric, the experience lasts 15 minutes.

Heartstrings is created by award winning company Inverted Citizens and performed by aerialist Jackson Cordery.

★★“We collectively hold our breath, mesmerised.”★★ -Sarah Catherall, Dominion Post on aerialist Jackson Cordery’s performance in ROXY by WITCH Music Theatre.

A mesmerising, concentrated performance totally worth experiencing

Review by Deborah Pope 19th Feb 2023

Catch this if you can – it is a great example of shows, artists and forms pushing at boundaries in the open space a Fringe Festival creates and supports.

Heartstrings by Jackson Cordery is simple, hypnotic and intriguing. It is circus, dance and music, and it’s immersive.

It is an unusual experience for an audience to walk into a space which is not created for performance. The Circus Hub is a large, busy training space for circus artists in Wellington. For Heartstrings, a red fabric tent-like structure dominates the space and is reminiscent of traditional circus with its impermanence, festoon lighting and welcome.

Calm ambient music creates an intimacy for the small audience who are gently led into the performance area and are seated or lying in a circle, looking up.

8 manilla ropes hang from the centre and as the performance begins, the artist slowly descends. Mesmerising and concentrated, the skill of the performer, the visceral closeness of the ropes and the body, the images created and sustained and the relationship with the audience who are slowly brought into the immersive performance are totally worth experiencing.

Go and experience!!
