Production Details

Storybox with Streamliner

Storybox turns the Opera House inside out with Inner Wilds, exposing the infinite creative potential housed within this iconic establishment, and the artists who have graced its stage.

Through the magic of projection mapping, the building facade is contrasted against dreamlike organic forms within, initially viewed through the windows and eventually escaping out into the night.

A wild time on Manners

Review by Ines Maria Almeida 22nd Feb 2021

Manners Street has always been a little wild, especially since it’s become a hub for crime, anti-social behaviour and a sign of increasing homelessness. As part of ‘What If The City Was A Theatre’, audiovisual company Streamliner with a partnership with Story Box has created a new animated projection illuminating these important issues.

Using Wellington’s Opera House as a blank canvas, the show uses government funding – Covid-19 rebuild funds more specifically – to light up Te Aro Park, which has been a constant in the news over the last few months, and one you probably avoid at night. But I think you should take a risk for this experience. Just go in a group, and you’ll be right.

The animated light show is only 5 minutes long and comes with its very own soundtrack by Will Ricketts for Wellington’s fave band, The Phoenix Foundation. It’s a beautiful respite from the surroundings of people sleeping rough.

The goal of all art is, of course, to make you think. And while I find it easy to zone out while listening to the tunes and visually tripping out to the work, Inner Wilds is about getting people to open their eyes to this incredible part of Wellington’s history, inspiring us all to give more of a damn. It won’t solve the problem, but it’ll get more people into an area that has so much potential.

As I sit on a ledge, there are others with me, taking it in: the music, the vibes, the energy of the space. And I feel lucky to be here in this park, observing it all; experiencing this wild time on Manners.
