Production Details

He’s a bit posh, likes a bit of tweed, has the odd whinge and has even appeared in a Harry Potter film.
The ‘best of British’ moniker has never been a more appropriate than for a newcomer to the 2010 NZ International Comedy Festival , Miles Jupp.
As English comedians go he has a first class pedigree having won the prestigious ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ new face competition at the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe to launch his new career followed up with a nomination for ‘Best Newcomer’ when he returned to the Fringe in 2004 with his first solo show ‘Gentleman Prefer Brogues’.
Following further solo shows in 2005 he left the stage to concentrate on film, television and radio work with parts in ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Death Defying Acts and Is Anybody Out There. More recently Miles has appeared in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Dagenham Girls.
He returned to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2009 where he was spotted by NZ Comedy Festival scouts and invited to our festival.
“You have to love a guy who refers to The Chippendales as those "buff American dance chaps". I could, without a scintilla of exaggeration, listen to Miles Jupp every night of August and still not tire of his delightful wordsmithery and mellifluous tones. There is not a wasted word or an uncrafted moment in this hour.” **** The Scotsman August 2009

Connection finally achieved

Review by John Ong 26th Apr 2010

An unpronounceable volcano almost stopped Miles Jupp from making it to his first show in Wellington, but fortunately, the self-proclaimed “post twat” did manage to make it here from his English home. Jupp wastes not a moment on stage. With ruthless efficiency, he launches straight into a tightly scripted, tightly delivered journey of personal observation.

There is more than a hint of truth in Jupp’s jokes about his accent being hard to warm to and he does play a rather convincing arrogant toff, complaining about the use of the word “okay”. Indeed, Jupp’s rant is the work of a wordsmith and is at times clever.

However, his attempts at more shocking humour (including a long treatise into a recent medical procedure) seem too polite, too polished when presented to an antipodean audience more accustomed to, say, Dai Henwood.

Once you allow yourself be as judgmental as Jupp is about the less fortunate (or more fortunate?) people one has to share this world with – Irish comedians, Stephen Hawking, drunk people having fun on a night bus to Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve, his constantly-urinating newborn son – you do find yourself having a bit of a giggle.

Only in the final, self-deprecating moments of his set, however, does Jupp finally connect with his audience.
