Chinese New Year 2015 Welcomes in the Year of the Sheep
19 February 2015 – 8 February 2016
Join us in celebrating the most important festival in the Chinese calendar – Chinese New Year – as Wellington ignites a weekend of activities and entertainment. Asian Events Trust is proud to be the organising body of the Wellington Chinese New Year Festival – an event that started 13 years ago in a tiny corner of Courtenay Place, Wellington.
A major holiday in many Asian cultures, Chinese New Year is often referred to as the Spring Festival. It is a time for family, reunion, good food, and steeped in many traditions and themes of good luck, fortune, happiness, wealth and longevity.
For 2015, we return to the TSB Bank Arena and Frank Kitts Park to host our celebrations, plus we introduce Shed 6, which is our dedicated food stall venue.Entry is free and we’ll open as many entry doors as possible to encourage the comings and goings of visitors to all activities. Watch out for the full programmes, coming soon.
Saturday 14 February – New Clothes for the New Year Fashion & Dance
Wearing new clothes is one of the Chinese New Year traditions, it symbolises a fresh start and a new beginning to the year. A new piece of clothing to wear on this special day, be it a designer outfit or your casual must-have, even as simple as a pair of new socks, it’s all in the spirit of sharing this occasion! So a great way to celebrate this ancient custom is for fashion designers to show off what they have to offer the discerning public, and couple the event with a music and dance.
