Dunedin Fringe 2011

Production Details

Punch Lines Not Included is a new show from That Indian Guy who previously toured his shows D’arranged Marriage, From India with Love and Cornershop Confessions to Dunedin. Punch lines Not Included is a lot more stand up based and will be a piece that premiers at the 2011 Dunedin Fringe.

Punch Lines not Included is about a comic Tyrone trying to find his comedy stride. He has a manager who tolerates him as he is an old friend but in a way as delusional as him. He attempts all the genres of comedy in search for the perfect glove that fits. As Tyrone looks for his comic voice he relies on his manager for guidance which at times can be detrimental to his plight.

Tyrone at times accepts the criticism and at other time is outraged and shoots himself in the foot for future work.

Come and learn the life and times of a stand-up on and off stage in Punch Lines Not Included.

Engaging hilarity

Review by Katarina Filipe 21st Mar 2011

The show may have revolved around a comedian struggling to find his niche, but Tarun Mohanbhai (as Tyrone) has certainly worked out what he’s good at.

Jumping from a gangster comedian to a female comedian, Tyrone soon had the audience laughing – in stitches even, for some of the quips.

His jokes were fresh but they were even better when coupled with his hilarious facial expressions. It was a show that had a good balance of offensiveness and respect. There were moments that made you cringe and laugh at the same time, and then moments where you felt a wee bit bored with the arrangement.

The fade-out-fade-in part of the show where Tyrone talked on his cellphone became tiring after awhile. Perhaps less of the Who Let the Dogs Out ringtone and more of Tyrone’s ad-libbing and anecdotes, and the show would have been perfect.

It was interesting to see how far Tyrone would go when he mentioned the Canterbury earthquake and Japan tsunami, but – probably much to the audience’s relief – it certainly wasn’t anything near American comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who was fired for his inappropriate Twitter comments.

It was nice, however, that Tyrone wasn’t afraid to touch on sensitive subjects.

The way he engaged with the audience was hilarious, though the cosy venue did help with making it a more intimate show.

Punchlines Not Included was a fantastic hour of entertainment, and it is a show I’d highly recommend to anyone looking for light relief during the Fringe Festival.
