SING IT WRONG

Fringe Bar, 26-32 Allen St, Te Aro, Wellington

23/11/2017 - 23/11/2017

Production Details

Capital Comedy’s newest show, Sing It Wrong is a show where we take songs you know and love and rewrite the lyrics, making them funnier than they ever were on the radio.

The acts have written these parodies themselves especially for the night. Hear lyrics that make you laugh until your sides hurt and if you want to, sing along.

This is a show designed to mix the best bits of live music and comedy, hosted by two lovely ladies Julz Burgisser and Katie Boyle. They’ll crack jokes, sing their own songs and introduce your lineup of comedy singers.

The lineup is full of all types of performers, from comedians to musicians and including people who are usually found doing other performance, like actors, sports people, and dancers. It’s a lively fun show where anything could happen on stage during their time to shine.

A good range of subjects

Review by Margaret Austin 24th Nov 2017

Hosted by Julz Burgisser and Katie Boyle of Capital Comedy, Sing it Wrong takes place on the deep stage at the Fringe Bar. Last night’s small but expectant audience contemplate three mics on tall stands and a short music stand before the entrance of the two exuberant hosts.

“You’ve got the stage all to yourself,” says one. And that turns out to be the watchword for this show, as each of the performers is encouraged to give us their rendering of Sing it Wrong.

This reviewer can’t help but enjoy the range of subjects chosen to chant about. Set to the music of well-known songs, we get to hear how useful vibrators are from Katie, about a “tsunami of creeps” with digs at certain politicians by Ben Powdrell and from Alexander Sparrow, with his shock of blonded locks, about the cycling glories of being a Morman.

“I’d stand well clear of this one,” warns Greg Ellis, before eliciting a subject to sing about from the audience. He gets “tractors” and with the improvised impishness he’s famous for launches into a reggae-backed number which calls on Jah. And guess what rhymes with tractor? Patois!

The show ends with a humorous lament by Brad Zimmerman: a self-deprecating song that captures the relative obscurity in which many comedians nevertheless flourish.

Technical back-up works well. Most of the performers need their words propped up on the music stand, but that barely detracts from the enjoyment of this show.

Hi Margaret,

One small correction, the vibrator song was written and performed by Julz Burgisser. Katie Boyle's song was about her boyfriend's taste in cheese and dinosaur costumes.

Thank you for the review!
