Unpredictable and brutally honest audience

Review by Aminata Hamadi 03rd May 2015

This is a brilliant specially crafted show that you and your little monsters will thoroughly enjoy!

I’ll admit that my expectation for the Stand Up for Kids show was not that great – what do kids know about comedy anyway? As I enter the theatre, I overhear a mum say to her daughter, “Honey, this will be your first comedy show.” Her daughter then kindly asks, “Mummy, what’s comedy?” Your kids may not know what comedy means but they’ll totally get it.

Stand Up for Kids is an ingenious addition to the Comedy Festival line-up and I cannot recommend it enough. If you have kids between the ages of four and eight then this is a show you must see. What you get when you add comedians to a room chock-full of energetic kids is authentic unscripted comedy in its purest form.

Big Laughs for Little Monsters is hosted by the energetic Jared Fell who does a fantastic job of entertaining and introducing the acts. Fell sets the pace with glittery confetti, magical moments and tonnes of laughs. Trygve Wakenshaw brings his mime comedy to the table filling his set with the sounds and drama of chickens crossing the road, extravagant dance moves and even accepting a splits challenge from a young audience member.

Rhys Mathewson brings rhythm to the stage when he tap dances, creates laughs out of poos and provides cake to go with all the glittery confetti. Australian comedian Jon Bennett strikes a chord with the little ones when he starts talking about the antics of sibling rivalry.

Performing stand up for children is a tough gig for a comedian. In this highly interactive show the comedians have just as much fun as the audience which only enhances the electric atmosphere. The kids are clinging to the edge of the stage captivated by what’s happening and eager to respond.

While the humour is traditionally left to the comedian to deliver, the kid’s responses and interjections are much funnier than anything a comedian could write! They are unpredictable and brutally honest. The cast of humorists manage to go with the flow creating wonderful comedy for the whole family.

You’ll leave this show with a huge grin on your face, having had your funny bone sufficiently tickled – and your kids will too.
