I invite you to join me on a voyage into the past…

Bruce Mason’s iconic solo show is a classic of New Zealand theatre.

Imagine if you will Te Parenga – A postcard beach-side paradise where wacky and wonderful small-town characters roam free and easy, squelching sand between their toes in the summer sun. It is the summer of the Depression, and our 12-year-old hero finds the world he is entering into, as he teeters on the cusp of adulthood, is not quite all he imagined it to be …

The days of childhood slowly thread through memory like a golden snake… each day joined to the next by unbreakable filament…

So one thinks, until the thread does break and the snake falls to bits…

First performed and toured by Mason himself throughout the 1960s and 70s, The End of the Golden Weather has been staged in ensemble several times since the 1980s, notably in versions by Ramond Hawthorne and Theatre Corporate in 1981, and Murray Lynch in 1987. Mosy recently Lynch directed his version for the Auckland Theatre Company in 2011.

West Coast Theatre and thirteen of Taranaki’s best young actors now reimagine this classic work from the original text by Mason, directed by NZ theatre professional Holly Shanahan. Holly’s theatre career has included work with Circa Theatre, Taki Rua and BATS Theatre, fortyfivedownstairs and Winterfall theatre in Melbourne, and her own independent theatre company work in both Melbourne and Wellington. Her professional performing work has spanned film, television and theatre in both NZ and Australia.

Back in her home town to raise her young family, Holly’s aim is to create inspiring local theatre in Taranaki to national and international standard. To speak to what a small place can make and do through contemporary performance training, expoloration and the drive to be outstanding. West Coast Theatre is about pushing boundaries and speaking to the modern audience in new and meaningful ways to engage people in the theatre again.

Join us for this classic play. Support a growing theatre company in Taranaki. See what we can do.  Be surprised. Be inspired.
