Brilliant in conception and execution

Review by Donna Banicevich Gera 13th Mar 2018

Last night at BATS Theatre in the Heyday Dome as part of the Wellington NZ Fringe Festival The Travelling Sisters – Toupé from Australia opened the first stage of their international tour to an enthusiastic full house. And what an opening it was.

What they achieve in one show Is an imaginative work combining physical comedy, original music and a series of finely crafted believable characters thrown into some bizarre situations. Each character we meet pulls us into their world. The pace is spot on – you feel like you’re on a rollercoaster rising then falling, following the twists and turns of each story. Nothing is expected or predictable. It’s a fun ride to be on. These women are artists.

Apparently, so the story goes, the three met at drama school and crafted this show in response to their search for work since graduating. It’s brilliant in conception and execution, and clearly shows the talents of the three. This sort of show appeals to me, created and performed by a group of women.

The performance has already won several awards: the best comedy at the Melbourne Fringe last year, and the New Zealand Tour Ready award. It was also nominated for best newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2017.

It runs through until Friday night 16th March here in Wellington and really is worth seeing. For 60 minutes they’ve had the audience laughing out loud on so many different levels. We all need a good laugh. Leaving the theatre feels like you’ve caught some infection and you can’t get rid of the smile on your face.
