Magical, gentle, beautiful to watch

Review by Heidi North 20th Jul 2017

In this Australian production of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, four of Eric Carle’s classic tales are brought to life: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, Mister Seahorse and The Very Lonely Firefly.

Debuted in New York at the beginning of 2016, the show has since been performed (using different casts) around the world. Using puppets and set to meditative music, it holds the audience’s attention and is a great example of setting a tone for children’s theatre that doesn’t need to be all fast-paced antics and pantomime trickery.

Brought to life with a cast of four talented performers wielding over 75 stunning puppets, this show is a wonderfully faithful take on Eric Carle’s classic tales.

While the four stories are all well done, it’s the final one, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, that the audience are hanging out for. And it doesn’t disappoint; the magical transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is just as delightful as in the original picture book.

The young audience are mesmerised by The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show’s magical, gentle pace. This slick production is beautiful to watch. Highly recommended.
