Have you ever thought about how much we say to one another through actions, gestures or facial expressions? Sometimes these can be better understood than a jumbled answer that we can’t properly articulate. In Words Unspoken, writer and director Hannah Wright has created a piece in which these concepts are explored consciously. “So often we say two different things at the same time. We say ‘yes’, but at the same time we shake our heads or step back. I play with the way in which we can have parallel conversations with entirely different meanings or responses.”

The show is split into two halves. First of all is Touch, a play which follows two relationships – one coming together, and the other falling apart. “What they say really doesn’t matter – it’s just small talk. It’s how they physically interact that shows their true feelings or intentions” says Hannah. Both take place in everyday situations – in a café, on a picnic bench. Hannah points out that these are people that we should all be able to relate to.

The second half, Speak. In this, the focus is on what we want to say through gesture but which we often miss, or are too afraid to vocalise. Hannah explains that “this is more of duologue. It’s almost like an internal conversation that just isn’t being heard.”

Words Unspoken is an intimate show, with only four actors, all performing in an intimate setting, which aims to draw audiences in by our shared humanity and unspoken forms of interaction.

About Hannah Wright 

Hannah co-directed Oedipus Rex in May of 2012. This is her first solo directing role. Hannah works as an administrator in English and Theatre Studies up at the University of Waikato. She has done a number of production and backstage roles with various companies over the years, most recently with Fullhouse Productions. Theatre is what she is passionate about, and loves the group atmosphere and combined ideas and creations that comes from a production.
